Contractor Training at the Pooley House

In October 2019, the Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) held the City of San Antonio’s first-ever deconstruction contractor training for City-licensed general and demolition contractors. Ten individual contractors representing eight companies participated in a multi-day training comprised of a hybrid classroom-job site curriculum. OHP staff partnered with the National Park Service (NPS) to partially deconstruct a circa 1935 wood-framed structure located on NPS property near Mission San Juan. OHP contracted with The ReUse People, Inc., to conduct the training.

Brick and stone was salvaged from the structure for the NPS’s “bone yard,” or materials resource bank used to repair other NPS buildings in the region, including the San Antonio Missions. Additional materials, including interior shiplap, exterior siding, hardwood floors, structural wood beams, wood windows and doors, and hardware were salvaged for reuse, resale, or donation.
